COOKIN’ ON 3 BURNERS w/ STELLA ANGELICO

When things went well, my mum always used to say 'We are cooking with gas!' I was reminded of this saying when Dan West, Jake Mason, and Ivan Khatchiyan had played just a few beats into their performance!

This was a performance for the young and the old, with the average age probably about mid-50s. It's been so long since I've been to a concert that I was just as excited as when I first attended Skyhooks as a pimple-faced teenager screaming for my idols.

Cookin' on 3 Burners is a funk trio best known for their 2016 smash worldwide (remixed) hit 'This Girl'.* This isn't usually my music style of choice but halfway into the first song, I was really enjoying it and thinking that the inevitable ear ringing later would be well and truly worth it.

It's clear that these performances have experience (20 years of local and international work in fact) and it's not just because of the salt and pepper hair and lack of it. The strumming on the guitar, tight drum breaks and keyboard playing was faultless. Each of the performers was relaxed and enjoying themselves which had a contagious effect on the audience. Swaying became dancing and a fake safety test bought a lot of dancers down to the dance floor. I love to see other people's limbs flying around with sweet abandonment.

I loved the voice of the special guest vocalist, the wide-smiling Stella Angelico. At times, her strutting and big voice reminded me of my favourite - Amy Winehouse. The songs were perfectly suited to her voice and she was clearly in her element.

I confess I have a preference for female singers, so these comments are not a poor reflection and the bands' proficiency. I also prefer lyrics to instrumental pieces. It seems that others might agree as the applause reflected their enthusiasm. All through the night, I keep catching myself tapping away to music. Cookin' on 3 Burners were very entertaining. They involved the audience, were easy to listen to and the whole show was well thought out. If you're into music, then you are sure to enjoy the show immensely.
